Car Seats for Infants and Toddlers
We
all know the importance of car seats. But not many of us use them correctly. As
a new mother, the safety of my child is the most important thing on my mind.
The National Transportation Association reports eighty percent of children are
not correctly secured in a car seat. What I was unaware of, is that infants
should be in a rear facing or convertible seat until they are both one year old,
AND twenty pounds. Children who reach twenty pounds before their first birthday
should still be facing backwards. Those who reach their first birthday but are
not yet twenty pounds should also use a rear facing car seat. The National
Transportation Association offers these provisions to help us protect our
children. Any trauma caused by a car accident could be life threatening. One of
the most common mistakes made is placing an infant seat in the path of an air
bag. The National Transportation Association suggests children over forty
pounds should continue using a booster seat until they are at least eight years
old. Now that I’m a mom, I can appreciate messages like these, and you should
too.
