    1. Oh, wow. I'm such a goof! I really enjoy writing and hope to sharpen my skills with this course. I'm focusing more on voiceover and voice acting, but I do love to write as well.

  2. In my academic and professional career, I've learned that writing is a skill that not everyone possesses. However, I've found that it has gotten much easier for me over the years. I am a music business major and have become more interested in song writing. I believe this course is the next step to see if I can diversify my writing skills or if I should go in another direction.

  3. Thanks Vaneese and Monica! Great to have you in class. Interesting about song writing - "word choice" - the EXACT WORD - is crucial for radio writing as it is for lyric writing - don't you think?

  4. Very excited for this course. I am an aspiring writer who's father has been a journalist for my entire life so I guess it's only natural that a part of me would want to follow in his footsteps. However, I also have musical dreams, including being a songwriter and producer. I hope that this course can help me expand my knowledge of writing while also giving me continued practice with the form of media that I want to be involved in.

  5. Hi, I'm looking forward to this course. This is my first online course at Columbia, so I think it'll be an interesting experience. My ambition is voice over, but I also enjoy tapping in my imagination and write stories. This course looks like it'll help me with social media, time management, and nurture my ideas through various writing techniques.

  6. I think all who are writing here will see chances to expand their writing chops. In this medium, we work very hard to "write for the ear." And that's what we will be working on all the time. Look for word on your latest lecture and first assignment through your LOOP email in the next day.

  7. I took this course because another writing friend of mine took this class this past semester and told me I would enjoy it. I write comedy, and I enjoy writing fake commercials as well as short sketches. I am a film major, with a minor in acting. I would like to learn how to get a laugh without any of the joke being seen, just heard, and I believe this class will help me accomplish that.

  10. Hi everyone! Excited and somewhat nervous to be apart of this class- online classes are out of the norm for me because in the regular swing of things during the semester, it's very hard for me to keep up with remembering about the class. But I feel confident with this being my only class that'll I'll be very attentive to it!

I'm a F&V major, so writing for the screen is one of my strong points. I got my hands wet in V&A1 with writing scripts for the radio, but I felt I was almost guessing, so I hope this will give me a solid foundation as to how to write for radio!

  11. Brian - No guessing here. We'll delve right into what makes writing for the ear so important and why sometimes audio only can be very powerful for persuasion and emotional content. I've had a lot of F&V majors take this class. I think it really enhances their work and helps them to see the importance of good audio.

  12. I have taken writing classes before and done well. I have never taken a radio class so it will be interesting to see what it is like to write for a radio. I'm really looking forward to this class

  13. Elesha! Great to have you here. You'll find this class to be a very different kind of writing...one that is meant to be HEARD not read. Which, in many ways, creates great challenges but wonderful opportunities.

  15. I'm very interested in different forms of writing. I'm a PR major and fiction writing minor, so I've been exposed to writing in many forms. I have written a lot of PSA's for events intended for radio. I feel that this course will enhance my writing skills and appeal to my enjoyment for writing.

  16. Welcome, Jacki. I think you'll find this class perfect for sharpening those skills.
Be sure you got the lecture and assignment information on your Loop email.

AND EVERYONE: Reminder -- first assignment is due Saturday by 5pm. Please remember to post one of your pieces on the blog for comment. I'll be looking for ACTIVE COMMENTS from all students. Go after it!

  17. Hi! I'm excited for this class, because I believe it will help me. I'm not always great with words, whether in a paper or a speech I tend to ramble. This class interested me in that I must capture my audience's attention with a few choice words and no visuals. Since I am a dance major this will be quite new to me and I'm excited for the challenge.

  18. Hey all! This is looking good. Here's what I need now - please start to comment on each other's work here on the blog. We are focusing mostly on "writing for the ear" --- read the work aloud, how does it "sound?" Does it sound like what someone would "say?" or is it stilted language and sound more like what someone would "read?" YOU MUST READ OUT LOUD to be able to determine this. But most importantly, comment on each other's work here. BTW- I will NOT be making comments on your work on the blog. This is YOUR place for peer comment and I don't want to direct it or taint it in anyway. My comments on your work will come by email. Be sure to check your email today (Sunday) and Monday for the next step in the process and new assignment. Questions? Let me know.

  23. I would like to post my essay, but I am having trouble. I tried commenting so I could become a contributor but it doesn't seem to be working.

  24. Please try to comment on everyone's piece - think about writing for the ear, read it out loud, etc. Think about how it would sound on the radio.
