News Writing-Bail Denial for Man Accused of Shooting a 5-Year-Old Boy

-->
Bail was denied Sunday to a Chicago man accused of shooting a five-year-old boy and two other friends at a South Side park early Friday in an apparent gang war.

Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. denied bail to accused shooter Darrell E. Chambers for being a public safety risk.

Chambers, a member of the “Ragtown Boys” faction of the Gangster Disciples, shot five-year-old Jaden Donald in the abdomen, along with five dozen others. Three eyewitnesses identified Chambers as the shooter, said attorney Jillian Dillman.

Police and the child’s mother say he has undergone several surgeries at Advocate Christ Medical Center. Ten people are dead from this incident.

La Grange resident, John Wilkins, fished for twenty-four hours this past weekend catching over two thousand fish. Starting Friday morning, by Saturday he had caught 2,011 fish — just 638 shy of the 2011 record set by Jeff Kolodzinski of Minnesota.
Wilkins trained for six months to try and beat the record. Although he failed to reach it he seems optimistic, saying he plans to turn his record attempt into an annual event with a mini-marathon for kids.

A Colorado boy died Sunday after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool. Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas says the boy was reported missing Sunday morning. Paramedics arrived soon after the alert call and took the boy to Silver Cross Hospital. Will County’s coroner pronounced that the boy was dead at 11:55 A.M. Kaupas says there was no evidence of foul play, and perhaps the boy wandered into the neighbor’s property through a gate left open.

Lisa Brown (2:00)

(Setting is the Michigan House of Representatives)

SFX: Loud chatter from crowd, gasps

SFX: Gavel hitting the table

SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE: I’m calling to order this legislation in the Michigan House of Representatives. Now, Representative Lisa Brown, I’m not sure I understand why you made such an inappropriate, brash comment. Can you explain yourself?

REP BROWN: Well Mr. Speaker, since this entire day has been spent with you and a bunch of equally old, equally white men speaking about why there should be restrictions and regulations on abortion practices, I was just wondering why you were all so interested in my vagina?

SFX: More gasps, chatter

SPEAKER: Representative Brown, that’s enough!

REP BROWN: Is it because you don’t have a vagina? Are you suffering from vagina envy?

SPEAKER: That’s…not even a real thing.

REP BROWN: Hey it’s okay. I’ve suffered from penis envy in the past. However, the difference is: I’ve never told you men what to do with your penises. Well, unless you count that weekend in Cabo a decade back.

SPEAKER: Representative Banks, your hand is raised. I assume you want to weigh in.

REP BRIAN BANKS: Yes I do, Mr. Speaker. Ms. Brown, wanna grab dinner after this?

REP BROWN: Representative Banks, I’m flattered but no means no.

SPEAKER: Ms. Brown! I’m not sure what you expect to gain from this outlandish word vomit, but it cannot bode well for your career.

REP BROWN: And deciding what women can or can’t do with their vaginas cannot bode well for you ever getting laid again.

SFX:  A collective “OOOOH” from the crowd

SPEAKER: You’re finished! You are officially barred from speaking on this House floor. I hope you’re proud of yourself, Ms. Brown.

REP BROWN: Fine. I just have one question for you.

SPEAKER: What?

REP BROWN: You know that angry, scolding look a woman gives you when you’ve crossed her?

SPEAKER: I do.

REP BROWN: Wait until almost every woman in Michigan is giving you that look tomorrow morning.

SFX: Heels walking on floor.
SFX: Door slamming

SPEAKER: Crap.

Avengers Assemble.

(The location is a secret building, abandoned, dimly lit.)
SFX: Background chatter, interupted....
Iron Man: Okay! Time to begin this initiation ceremony. Thank you, fellow heroes for showing up for tryouts for the Avengers. As your leader, Iron Man. I strive to get the most popular and radical heroes in the Avengers. Now, I won’t beat around the bush. We are very popular. And we need the most popular heroes in this group. We don’t need any losers like Aquaman around.

Aquaman: (Offended scoff)
SFX: Dolphin noises, ocean waves breaking through a door.
Aquaman: I can see we are not wanted here.

Iron Man: ...Anyways, I have decided to open up auditions for even DC superheroes. With my less important co-judge, Captain America, we are here to find the NEXT Avenger. Let’s get started!

Iron Man: Alright! First hero! We’re ready to see you! Batman, why do you think you would be a great Avenger?
MUS: Dark theme music under....
Batman: (Voice so deep and scruffy, can’t even understand him.) Brufffashavasrrrrrrr.
Iron Man: Uhhhh, could you repeat that, please?
Batman: BRUFFFFASHAVVVASRRRRRR!

Iron Man: Ummmm …... Next.
MUS: Cut off.

MUS: Superman theme begins and goes under....
Superman: If I were an Avenger. I would make my parents and Krypton proud. As defender of Smallville and the entire world, I think I’m more than qualified to be your next partner.

Iron Man: …. You did just have a recent box office success.... but.... You no longer wear your red underwear on the outside of your suit. For vanity purposes, you can’t look cooler than me. NEXT.
MUS: Superman theme is cut off.

SFX: (WHOOSH, fast sounding run)

Iron Man: What was that?

Flash: You could say I FLASHED before your eyes. Flash here, your NEXT Avenger.

Iron Man: No. I’m the ONLY one that can provide one liners. NEXT!

Iron Man: Cap, we have been through hundreds of auditions today. And no one is less important than me, but still qualified. Maybe it was a mistake to open up and try to find a new member. How hard is it to find a member who won’t be taken as seriously as us and not be as popular?

MUS: Dramatic superhero music under....

Iron Man: HOW DID I NOT SEE THIS? HE’S PERFECT!

Announcer: (Dramatic, deep) The AVENGERRSSSS. Defending our world. IRON MAN.
CAPTAIN AMERICA. THOR. AND AQUAMAN.

SFX: Dolphins and ocean waves.
MUS: Over after ocean waves.
